Smartlipo uses two different laser beams to break up cellulite fibers and permanently destroy unwanted fat cells.    In addition, the beneficial heat that is created can produce significant skin tightening.  

After the fat is treated with the laser, power assisted (PAL)  narrow cannula liposuction is used to remove the unwanted broken down fat.

The ideal candidate is not significantly overweight who has deposits of unwanted fat that have been resistant to diet. Typical areas for treatment would be the abdomen, outer or inner thighs, knees, arms, bra line, or neck.

One or possibly two body areas are selected for treatment. The entire procedure can be easily performed completely under local anesthesia. Oral sedation is not necessary for most people. The first stage of the procedure is to numb the area with a dilute lidocaine containing solution in a very gently manner. Next the laser cannula is inserted into the fat through a few tiny skin incisions. Finally the treated fat is removed with a small suction tube. The entire procedure typically takes 1-1 ½ hours per body zone and there is surprisingly little discomfort.

Most people are able to carry on their usual routine without interruption. There is very little to no bruising. The treated area tends to be swollen for several weeks as if nothing was done. During this time the area is tender to touch but pain medicine other than Tylenol or Motrin is usually not necessary. After a month or so the new contour is becoming apparent and the final result is in about three months.
