FDA Ends Ban on Silicone-Gel Breast Implants
A 14-year ban on silicone-gel breast implants has ended, making the device an option for women who are considering breast augmentation. This is a monumental decision considering 291,000 women had their breasts surgically enlarged last year.
The decision came after years of government scrutiny over the devices as well as extensive research conducted by both government and medical officials. The FDA feels there is reasonable assurance that silicone-gel breast implants are safe and effective and there is adequate information to allow women to make an informed decision.
Doctors and patients agree that silicone-gel implants look and feel more natural than do those filled with saline. Until now, only women involved in research studies or undergoing breast-reconstruction were given the option to choose silicone-gel implants.
